Power outages due to the bad weather are a common problem that the world has been facing a lot during the past. Hurricanes, tornadoes and other kinds of storms have been causing numerous losses of power by destroying the infrastructure used for power transmission. Different solutions to different problems caused by these power outages (that can last for days) are available nowadays. Solar street lights are among the most important of them, and these are the reasons why.

Street lighting is nominally important for being a source of light, which is a fundamental need in all parts of the world. Not only that, it is also an important factor in preventing traffic accidents that can happen due to poor visibility conditions. These accidents are unfortunately quite common in cases of power outages. This is where solar-powered street lights come as a perfect back-up solution for any kind of storm.
These systems consist of four main parts: a solar panel that acts like an energy source, a battery that is being charged by the energy from the solar panel, a controller that controls the charging process, and the load that is essentially a LED lamp. LED lights consume significantly less power and have a longer lifespan, all while being cheaper than incandescent lights. This increases the energy efficiency of these systems, while also making them affordable and easy to install.
Solar street lights are not only completely independent from the utility grid but also completely independent from each other. This means that in the case of a power outage, solar street lights are powered by the energy either from the solar panel or the battery, with no physical connection to the grid, but also with no physical connection to each other. In other words, there is practically no interdependence between the street lights: if one stops working for any reason, the other street lights in the same area are not affected.

Solar power supply allows these systems to work completely independently from the power lines, power stations and any kind of large energy production systems. Not only that, but the energy that powers the whole lighting system is “clean” and the process of energy production does not pollute the environment. Also, the process of installation is simple and does not require significant construction works and extermination of local ecosystems.
Systems like these, that are both environment-friendly and completely functional during power outages, are a real example of how solar energy can be used for power backup. For these specific reasons, it is expected to see an increase in demand when it comes to solar street lights in the future.
