What is the goal of Dark Sky?

The main goal of the Dark Sky program is to help reduce the amount of light pollution. Light pollution is mostly caused by the over use of poorly designed LED street lighting fixtures.

What is LED Light Pollution?

Most of us are familiar with air, water, and land pollution, but did you know that light can also be a pollutant? The inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light – known as light pollution – can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife, and our climate.

Components of light pollution include:

Glare – excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort Skyglow – brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas Light trespass – light falling where it is not intended or needed Clutter – bright, confusing and excessive groupings of light sources

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is the recognized authority on light pollution and is the leading organization combating light pollution worldwide. IDA’s mission is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting.

IDA’s Goals:

-Advocate for the protection of the night sky -Educate the public and policymakers about night sky conservation -Promote environmentally responsible outdoor lighting -Empower the public with the tools and resources to help bring back the night -Light only what you need

When you’re lighting a street, park, or pathway, there’s the objects and area you want to illuminate, and then there’s everywhere else that light tends to spill into: people’s homes, people’s yards, parklands, and of course, the sky. In short, the main goal of IDA is to help LED street light producers to create street lights that will Light up only what is needed when they need it.

The LED light color temperature or CCT is the most important thing to look at when looking for Dark Sky approved solar streetlights.

What is CCT?

Color temperature defines the color appearance of a white LED. CCT is defined in degrees Kelvin; a warm light (yellowish) is around 2700K-3000K, moving to neutral white at around 4000K, and to cool white, at 5000K or more. The first LED technology had a temperature of 8,000K, meaning they emitted more than 45% blue light and were harsh on the eye, advances in LED technology have brought this down to a much warmer. Dark Sky recommends using street LED lights with 3000K or lower.

EnGoPlanet, solar street light producer introduced their new integrated all in one solar street light that meets Dark Sky requirements with 2700K and LED light directed only where needed. This solar-powered LED street light is a perfect solution for many areas without access to electricity.
